How to Boost Your Self-Esteem


Hello lovelies, how are you doing?

Sorry for the less frequent posts recently – I’ve been so preoccupied with University deadlines! However, as we precede to brighter mornings and friendlier weather, we can focus on the positive that Spring is soon to welcome us with a warm smile.

Today, I stumbled across an astounding figure which revealed that 85% of people have self-esteem issues. Although I knew self-esteem problems were common amongst society, I didn’t actually realise the extent of its prevalence. We live in a world surrounded by social media, where we are exposed to an influx of airbrushed and ‘perfect’ images. Careers become increasingly competitive and we often only hear about the successes of others. This can cause us to knock ourselves down, as we habitually begin to compare ourselves to others, which is detrimental to our self-esteem and our wellbeing. Having little confidence is a common feeling we have, but there are most definitely certain things which can be done in order to boost it. It involves a change of mental habit, and it definitely works for me! So today, I am going to share with you a few tips to help you improve your self-confidence, so I hope you enjoy!

  1. Treat yourself as your own best friend
    This is so effective. Whenever you begin to feel that you are putting yourself down, take a step back and ask yourself ‘would I say this to my best friend?’ The answer is, probably not. It’s very easy to become self-critical, and we end up telling ourselves things we would never dream of saying or thinking that about anybody else. Treat yourself as your own best friend, you are special, just like your best friend is!

  2. Remind yourself about the things you like about yourself
    This is something which can be easily implemented into your daily routine. After you read this blog post, list 3 things you love about yourself. This can be done every morning, evening or any time you are feeling unconfident. Injecting a syrup of self-love can make you feel so much better about yourself!

  3. Accept your flaws
    Nobody is perfect. There will always be something you don’t like about yourself, or perhaps you’re still fixated on that mistake you made the other day. These flaws and mistakes make you imperfectly perfect. You are perfect in your own way, so love yourself for who you are and embrace your flaws. It what makes you, you! What you don’t like about yourself, someone else will love about you. Everyone has flaws, we are just more susceptible to being aware and critical of our own.

Having self-confidence can be a tricky hurdle to tackle, but it’s important to focus on improving in as this will benefit your overall wellbeing! Love yourself for who you are! I hope these tips help you and I hope you’ve enjoyed reading!

Vegan Pancake Recipe


Hey guys! How are you doing today?

The rain here has plummeted down constantly this week, falling from the grey clouds and spitting on the ground – not ideal! However, we can’t forget that Pancake Day is soon approaching! A few months ago, I tried out a vegan pancake recipe and I absolutely loved it. From the powdery flour to the sugary vanilla extract, this recipe requires minimal ingredients and is super easy to make! So, today I thought I would share it with you! I don’t know about you, but nothing feels better than sipping a hot cup of tea under a soft blanket on a cold Sunday evening. So, get cosy and I hope you enjoy the post!

I’m pretty sure I found this recipe on the BBC website, but there are plenty of other vegan pancake recipes on the internet! All you need is:

300g self-raising flour, 1tsp baking powder, 1 or 2 tbsp sugar, vanilla extract, some cooking oil, 400g plant-based milk (I used oat milk), a mixing bowl, whisk/spoon and a frying pan!
I added 2 tbsp of sugar because I wanted them sweet!
Canola oil and light olive oil are good to use!

Throw them into a mixing bowl and give the mixture a whisk to create a smooth batter! Once smoothened and thick, scoop a portion of the mixture onto the frying pan, wait a few minutes and flip! It’s so satisfying to hear the mixture sizzle, as the creamy batter turns to golden baked circles of fluffiness.

To decorate, I drizzled the pancakes with maple syrup, pleasantly watching the syrupy liquid glaze over the freshly baked batch. I also sliced a fresh banana which added extra flavour (as well as adding a healthy twist!) But obviously there’s plenty of alternative options such as lemon, sugar, strawberries and chocolate (if you aren’t vegan) etc!

Some Tips and a Guide to Meditation


Hey everyone! How are you doing?
The weather this week has been manic! Gusty winds have raged through country and the cold weather has encouraged snowflakes to sprinkle the ground. For me, February month feels like a Tuesday of the week. Emerged in the midst of frosty weather, it’s also heaped with deadlines and stacked with copious amounts of work – stressful, right? Today, I want to share with you a few simple tips about meditation.

I’ve mentioned meditation a few times in many of my previous blog posts, as I know how effective it works when reducing stress. However, I realise I’ve never actually gone into detail and depth about it. Today’s blog post is going to focus on how I began meditation, the benefits of meditation and how to begin/fit it into your routine.

Firstly, some of you may be thinking ‘what actually is meditation!?’
Meditation is all about resting the mind and gaining a state of consciousness which is different from the normal wakening state. It’s about focussing on the present and containing our thoughts. Our minds are naturally so used to wandering and overthinking, which is why meditation can be hard at first, but practice makes perfect!

 “But how do you start!?” is a question so many people have asked me. Although I’m not a daily meditator, I have dipped in and out of meditation routines for years and years, so I can certainly talk about how I began. About 4/5 years ago, I was feeling overwhelmed during the exam period. My Dad, who meditates quite often, shared with me his experience about meditating and, after hearing all the positive effects it had, I decided to start myself. I searched some clips on YouTube – there’s so many! Type in “Practice Meditation for Beginners” and an endless list of options appears. I also really recommend “The Honest Guys” on YouTube and Spotify – they’re really good.

How do you meditate?
You must sit in a comfortable position, with your back straight and eyes closed. Focus on your breathing and focus on the sensations you feel within your body. Focus on the present. And, when you notice your mind is beginning to wander to other things (which it will at first), simply acknowledge it, and swiftly divert your attention back to the present moment. Practice makes perfect!

How to fit meditation into your routine:
Begin by scheduling a 5-minute slot each day to meditate. I recommend doing it in the morning, as this will begin your day with a fresh, clean slate. Meditating in the evening also helps, because it helps calm the mind before bed, altering your body into a resting state which initiates better sleep. Each day, gradually increase the amount of time slot which you spend meditating. It’s up to you how long you meditate for – whatever fits into your routine.  

The Benefits:
Personally, when I am routinely meditating daily, I feel an indefinable change in my mood. I feel less stressed, I cope with stress better and I overall naturally obtain a better mindset towards things. There are so many past studies which reveal the positive effects meditation has on both the body and mind – I’d definitely recommend giving them a read! It’s almost unbelievable because it is so effective. So, if it works for you, I would most definitely recommend giving it a go, because what have you got to lose?! It’s quick, simple and will benefit your wellbeing both physically, mentally and emotionally.

What To Do When You Feel Overwhelmed


7:00am. You wake up to the familiar sound of your alarm and already you are thinking about your to-do list which flows like the closing credit of a film. Wouldn’t it be so much easier to stay wrapped up in the warm comforts of bed, shielding yourself from all the stress? Life can calve endless chores and tasks into our days, making us feel overwhelmed and tired. I can’t count the amount of times I have had to take a step back and force myself to relax to help manage my stress levels. We’ve all been there, and it can be very mentally draining. So, today, I want to share with you a few tips which can help cope with these feelings of overwhelmingness.

  1. Let go of what you can’t control

I once read a statistic which showed a high percent of what we overthink and worry about doesn’t even happen. What a waste of thoughts, right? You can’t control everything in life, so letting go of the things you’re not in control of is a great first step to reduce stressful thoughts. I sometimes ask myself ‘what is the point in worrying about what I can’t control?’ Overthinking these things is pointless, because thinking about them won’t change anything – what will be will be. Let life unfold the way it wants to, because things work out eventually.

  • Simplify

When things feel overwhelming, it’s so easy to fill your mind with tasks, making you feel like they all need to be done at once. This only causes more stress. When you wake up, simplify what needs to be done. Break what needs to be done into smaller steps – you can do this by writing a to do list and prioritising. Seeing things written on paper definitely reduces my stress levels as they no longer feel jumbled in my head!

  • Relax

Relaxing when you feel overwhelmed can make you feel slightly guilty, I understand. But it’s so important to listen to your mind and body if you feel like you’re crashing. Allow yourself to just relax for a little while – your wellbeing is much more important. Also, you are way more likely to be more productive after a rest because it gives yourself time to replenish, so it’s a win-win!

So, there are a few tips I thought I would share with you when things feel like they are getting too much. It happens to all of us and I believe being able to cope with stress and put our wellbeing first is so important. Let me know how you get on!

How to Accept You For You


Hello everyone, how are you doing this evening?
Yesterday was my first day back at uni, so I’ve been consumed with busy schedules and adjusting back to the routine after the Christmas break. Today, dark clouds covered the sky, resembling a grey blanket and reflecting the cold air which felt like frosty icicles on my skin. It was so nice to return home and light the candles with a comforting hot water bottle, sheltered from the wintery climate outside.

Recently, I have been thinking about the importance of self-acceptance, and how crucial it can be for our mental health. It’s sometimes easy to be swept away by the negative voice in our heads which criticize us for our mistakes and focus unnecessarily on our weaknesses. Being able to accept ourselves for who we are not only injects a syrup of happiness into our lives, but also helps us flourish as individuals and increases our self-esteem.

In order to help achieve self-acceptance, being aware of your strengths and weaknesses is key. Remember that no individual is the same, we are all different – unique and special in our own ways. Our strengths and weaknesses shape who we are; our strengths help us shine and our weaknesses are aspects of ourselves which we can improve on. Adoring our strengths and accepting our imperfections creates a magical path, which creates a journey towards self-acceptance – it’s okay not to be perfect! Being perfect is impossible – if we were all perfect, we wouldn’t be unique.

Also, remember to focus on your accomplishments. It’s a great way to accept you for you. Did you complete an assignment today? Or have you ticked off a few things on your to-do list? Did you make someone smile today? Award yourself for the accomplishments you have achieved – they make you a great person and encourage a positive mindset.

I have also found that being able to let go of negative mistakes from the past is essential for accepting yourself for who you are. The past is in the past and it can’t be changed. Mentally fighting your previous mistakes when they are glued in the past only worsens how we feel. It’s done, it’s in the past and you are now in the present. So, try to live in the present, reward yourself for your accomplishments and try to focus on the things you love about yourself.

So, there’s just a little reminder that you are amazing the way you are. Everybody has strengths as well as weaknesses and being able to accept these imperfections is important in order to achieve self-acceptance.

How To Motivate Yourself on an ‘Off’ Day


Hey everyone, how are you all!?

I went for a walk yesterday. It was so frosty outside! There was ice glazed all over the ground, so wearing a woolly hat was a must! Right now, I am curled up in bed, drinking a soothing peppermint tea to wind down after the busy welcoming of Monday.

Today, I want to talk about ways to motivate yourself on an ‘off’ day. We all have off days, just like we have good days, and it’s totally normal. When these ‘off’ days occur, it can be difficult to even think about the ‘to-do list’ of the day, and the sound of ‘Netflix in bed’ sounds so much more appealing! However, learning to tackle these psychological obstructions is important, as it will feel a lot more rewarding at the end of the day if you have spent it being productive!

Firstly, remind yourself that the day is just one ‘off’ day, and tomorrow will be better. Being productive now will make tomorrow feel easier – you can do this!

Begin your day with writing a ‘to-do’ list and start with the easier, less effortful tasks. This will gently encourage you to ease into the routine of the day and, simultaneously, you will be productively ticking tasks off the list!

Reward yourself with breaks. Reward yourself for being proactive and completing the tasks you initially struggled to begin with. This is a great way to make yourself proud for what you achieved, which will boost your mood.

Also, remember listen to yourself. If you really need a break, then have one. Take things slow, and whenever you feel like you need to rest, then do it. Even if it is little and often, it’s so important to listen to the body and mind and look after ourselves with great care and love.

Remember to Self-Love


Hey everyone, I hope you’re all having a great day!

Before you read this post, grab yourself a hot drink, put some fluffy socks on and use this reading time to escape from the real world. You deserve a night’s rest before Monday greets us tomorrow morning! As we launch into January, the nights continue to precede to darkness during early hours of the day, as we patiently wait for Spring to arrive.

Today I want to talk about self-love. It’s something a lot of us struggle with because the voice in our heads can be so critical towards ourselves, and not so kind. What’s important here is remembering to treat yourself as your own best friend. You wouldn’t be critical of your best friend, so why should you be critical of yourself?

Start your day off with positive thoughts. Tell yourself something positive. When you wake up tomorrow morning, tell yourself that you will be productive today. Tell yourself you are loved. Tell yourself that today will be a good day. Filling your head with good thoughts not only creates an optimistic mindset, but also fills the beginning of a new day with positivity. Thinking about happy thoughts and setting positive affirmations in the morning creates a blanket of positivity which you can wear throughout the day!

Remember to be kind to yourself. A key route to self-love is accepting who you are as a person. Don’t put yourself down for any mistakes you make because life is a learning process – we all make mistakes. We are all learning on this journey together – remember that we are all different and that makes us unique and individual.

Accept yourself – accept both the talents and the faults you have because nobody is perfect! Focus on the positive aspects of yourself and remember that you are beautiful inside and out. Reminding yourself of the things you like about yourself is another great way to love yourself. We all have positive qualities, and although it’s hard, don’t let a few negative thoughts override the positives ones.

Dealing with Anxiety


Hey everyone, how are you all doing?

I’m currently waiting for the train heading back from London – it was absolutely freezing this morning! As I was walking to the tube station, there were layers of frost which glistened on the fallen leaves on the ground and the cold air felt like tiny icicles piercing my face. The chilly weather seems appropriate now that it’s finally December – I couldn’t be more excited about it! What advent calendars have you got this year?

Today I want to talk about anxiety. Whether it’s some more than others, we all feel it on different levels from time to time. In the moment, it can become very overwhelming with both the emotional and physical symptoms that come with feeling anxious. Over the years, I have tried out different methods to deal with these heightened feelings of anxiety, whether it’s in the particular moment or just in general. I’d like to share these coping mechanisms with you so you can try them out and hopefully they will help you.

  • Focus on your breathing
    When you’re in a moment of panic, what’s really important is your breathing. It’s mind over matter here, and if you can start to focus on your breathing, encouraging yourself to slowly breathe in and out, your mind will eventually be convinced that you aren’t anxious anymore because you are breathing slower. Be patient with this. A few slow breathes won’t stop you feeling anxious, but the persistence of slow breathing will gradually help yourself to calm down.
  • Get in touch with your senses
    I’ve read a lot about the effects of doing this when you are in a moment of panic and it is proven to be very effective. When you feel anxious, try to observe what’s around you and what you can see/touch/hear/smell. It helps channel your mind back to reality and reminds yourself that you are okay. Bringing your senses back to reality helps reduce anxiety as it’s a reminder that you are in control, you are secure, and you are okay.
  • Remind yourself that you have felt this way before
    Reminding yourself that you have felt this way before and nothing bad happened the last time is another way to reassure yourself that things will be okay. Yes, you feel anxious right now but this moment will pass, just like it did last time. Just focus on your breathing, get in touch with your surroundings and remind yourself this will pass.

These are some key coping mechanisms I’ve found to be very useful when I’m feeling anxious or overwhelmed. If you would like to hear more tips please let me know!

Acceptance


Hey guys!

How has your day been? My Christmas shopping has finally started; all the discounts are on so now is the perfect time! I can’t get enough of the glittery lights which parade the city centre, and the dazzling Christmas decorations which fulfil the shop windows, each spreading the jubilant buzz as December 1st approaches.

I’m sure you’ve had a busy day today. As the beautiful blue sky falls to darkness and the nightfall hours approach, allow yourself some quality time. Grab a cup of tea, switch off from the outside world and allow yourself some time to relax and read this post.

Today, I was walking back home, listening to this insightful podcast about wellbeing. The content within the podcast inspired me to write today’s post because it mentioned something which I feel a lot of us could be better at, which is acceptance.

We’ve all felt it: sadness, guilt, disappointment, jealousy – the list is infinite. It is important to remind ourselves that it is entirely normal to experience these feelings from time to time. However, I firmly believe that there are ways to deal with these certain emotions that sometimes negatively overwhelm us.

Over the years, I have learnt that being able to accept these negative feelings as they come is a way to help them go. A quote I picked up from the podcast was “what we resist, persists,” and it’s so true. When we try to fight anger, the heat inside us intensifies. When we try to battle sadness, it remains stuck in our chest. When we criticize ourselves for being jealous, we feel worse. Essentially, rebelling against our emotions (rather than allowing them to happen), can overall affect us negatively.

Treat yourself and your feelings with kindness. Remind yourself that what you are feeling doesn’t define who you are as a person. People experience different emotions daily and that’s okay. These feelings come and go and being able to accept them and watch them gradually dissolve is a part of the amazing journey to self-love.

So next time you feel down, don’t resist it. Allow it, accept that you are feeling that way as it will pass.

Being Kind to Yourself


Hello guys!

How are you all doing today?! Currently sat at my desk with a cup of tea (and some fluffy socks on) – it is freezing!

The other day, I was listening to a Podcast walking back from University. It was about healthy eating, encouraging us to eat well because our bodies are ‘temples’ which we should treat with care. Essentially, it was saying that if we put good things into our bodies, then there will be good outcomes which will benefit us (eg/ feeling healthier, better skin, being fitter etc). It inspired me to write this post because it led me to believe that surely if our bodies are temples, then our minds are too. So today, I want to talk about being kind to yourself.

‘I wish my lips were bigger,’ ‘my skin is so bad,’ ‘I wish I was thinner.’

Do these thoughts seem familiar? Every day, we are exposed to influxes of images and videos of people looking their best and having the most amazing time of their lives. Through adverts, social media, models and fitness guru’s, we are consumed into this downward spiral of self-comparison. We are constantly exposed to airbrushed images and desirable lives, resulting us to helplessly compare our worst to someone else’s best. What we need to remember is that our minds are temples, and so comparing ourselves to others and putting ourselves down only makes us feel worse and less confident – and nobody deserves to feel this way.

What can we do to minimise these habits? Firstly, it’s good to realise that you are doing it. When you notice that you are comparing yourself to others, or that you are putting yourself down, then you can alter the negative into a positive. So, instead of comparing yourself and putting yourself down, try saying “yes, she may have nice hair, but I love my eyes and I love that I’m a kind person.” Being kind to yourself and treating yourself the way you would treat a friend is one of the key routes to self-acceptance and happiness.
Secondly, remind yourself that everyone is different. You will have amazing qualities which some people won’t have, just like other people will have certain strengths you don’t have. We are all individual and talented in our own, unique ways and that’s totally fine. So be kind to yourself and remember to feed your mind with positive affirmations – you will feel the benefits of it!

When I’m having an off day, I find that writing a list of things I am grateful for and writing things that I like about myself really cheer me up. It is so easy to get wrapped up and distracted in our busy day-to-day schedules that we forget to be appreciative and grateful for the things we have in life.
