How to Accept You For You

Hello everyone, how are you doing this evening?
Yesterday was my first day back at uni, so I’ve been consumed with busy schedules and adjusting back to the routine after the Christmas break. Today, dark clouds covered the sky, resembling a grey blanket and reflecting the cold air which felt like frosty icicles on my skin. It was so nice to return home and light the candles with a comforting hot water bottle, sheltered from the wintery climate outside.

Recently, I have been thinking about the importance of self-acceptance, and how crucial it can be for our mental health. It’s sometimes easy to be swept away by the negative voice in our heads which criticize us for our mistakes and focus unnecessarily on our weaknesses. Being able to accept ourselves for who we are not only injects a syrup of happiness into our lives, but also helps us flourish as individuals and increases our self-esteem.

In order to help achieve self-acceptance, being aware of your strengths and weaknesses is key. Remember that no individual is the same, we are all different – unique and special in our own ways. Our strengths and weaknesses shape who we are; our strengths help us shine and our weaknesses are aspects of ourselves which we can improve on. Adoring our strengths and accepting our imperfections creates a magical path, which creates a journey towards self-acceptance – it’s okay not to be perfect! Being perfect is impossible – if we were all perfect, we wouldn’t be unique.

Also, remember to focus on your accomplishments. It’s a great way to accept you for you. Did you complete an assignment today? Or have you ticked off a few things on your to-do list? Did you make someone smile today? Award yourself for the accomplishments you have achieved – they make you a great person and encourage a positive mindset.

I have also found that being able to let go of negative mistakes from the past is essential for accepting yourself for who you are. The past is in the past and it can’t be changed. Mentally fighting your previous mistakes when they are glued in the past only worsens how we feel. It’s done, it’s in the past and you are now in the present. So, try to live in the present, reward yourself for your accomplishments and try to focus on the things you love about yourself.

So, there’s just a little reminder that you are amazing the way you are. Everybody has strengths as well as weaknesses and being able to accept these imperfections is important in order to achieve self-acceptance.

I hope you are having a great day and remember to keep smiling! I hope you have enjoyed reading this post and I hope it helps.

Appreciating the Small Things in Life

Hey lovely people, how is your day/evening going?

Before I begin this post, I just wanted to quickly say a huge thank you for all your support! I now have 70 of you who are subscribed to my blog, and although that may not seem a lot in comparison to others, I’m still so overwhelmed that so many of you are enjoying my posts – it means so much to me and I’m so happy I can help!

Currently feeling very zen right now. I’m curled up in bed, wearing some fluffy socks and drinking peppermint tea. I don’t know about you, but I love herbal teas – especially of an evening. It’s currently raining here; the water droplets are tapping on the ground outside ever so gently. I’ve lit a few candles which are emitting a fiery orange glow, making me feel super cosy!

Today I want to talk about appreciating the little things in life. My friend sent me a quote and it was a great reminder, so I thought I’d share it with you:

“Today, I will pay attention to the small things that bring me joy.”

I feel like it’s so important to remember this. It’s so easy to become wrapped up and consumed with the stress of our day to day lives that we focus on the negatives and we take the small things in life for granted. Sometimes in life, it’s required for us to take a step back, breathe and remind ourselves of the smaller things in life that make us happy. Whether it’s friends, family, your partner, a hobby or even if it’s as simple as a book you’re currently reading. In times of stress or difficulty, remember the simple, small things in life which we may often forget about!

So, I just thought I’d share that quote with you as it was a nice reminder for me and so I thought it would be a nice reminder for you too!

I hope you have a lovely day! Subscribe if you want to see more content, and feel free to follow my Instagram account somewhatperfectblog !

Remember to Self-Love

Hey everyone, I hope you’re all having a great day!

Before you read this post, grab yourself a hot drink, put some fluffy socks on and use this reading time to escape from the real world. You deserve a night’s rest before Monday greets us tomorrow morning! As we launch into January, the nights continue to precede to darkness during early hours of the day, as we patiently wait for Spring to arrive.

Today I want to talk about self-love. It’s something a lot of us struggle with because the voice in our heads can be so critical towards ourselves, and not so kind. What’s important here is remembering to treat yourself as your own best friend. You wouldn’t be critical of your best friend, so why should you be critical of yourself?

Start your day off with positive thoughts. Tell yourself something positive. When you wake up tomorrow morning, tell yourself that you will be productive today. Tell yourself you are loved. Tell yourself that today will be a good day. Filling your head with good thoughts not only creates an optimistic mindset, but also fills the beginning of a new day with positivity. Thinking about happy thoughts and setting positive affirmations in the morning creates a blanket of positivity which you can wear throughout the day!

Remember to be kind to yourself. A key route to self-love is accepting who you are as a person. Don’t put yourself down for any mistakes you make because life is a learning process – we all make mistakes. We are all learning on this journey together – remember that we are all different and that makes us unique and individual.

Accept yourself – accept both the talents and the faults you have because nobody is perfect! Focus on the positive aspects of yourself and remember that you are beautiful inside and out. Reminding yourself of the things you like about yourself is another great way to love yourself. We all have positive qualities, and although it’s hard, don’t let a few negative thoughts override the positives ones.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading today’s post and I hope it helps. Remember to keep smiling and love yourself because you deserve it.

I hope you all have a lovely rest of your day/evening! Subscribe if you want to see more posts and thank you soooo much for all your support!

New Years Resolutions

Hey everyone! How is the New Year treating you so far?

I went for a walk today – the weather was lovely. It felt so refreshing to switch my phone off and have some ‘me’ time. It was a time of reflection and gratitude. The air was crisp and felt fresh on my skin, as the aura of a New Year danced around the streets. I took this time to be thankful for everything around me, as well as focusing on myself and what I’m hoping to achieve this year.

So…New Years Resolutions, do you have any? Or any goals in general? As we set ourselves these desirable goals, it may eventually become tiring and frustrating if we feel like we aren’t achieving them straight away, or perhaps we are finding it difficult to keep up with our new goals. For example, I know a lot of people who are going to work on their mindsets this year, and are aiming to think more positively. It may be frustrating at first when you are trying to be positive but still feel the same as you did ‘in 2019.’ This can be the same for any goal – whether you are wanting to gym more, work hard, go completely vegan etc. These goals can be challenging and frustrating when we may find ourselves struggling to keep up with them. Sound familiar?! I definitely find myself feeling frustrated at times.

What’s important to remember is that patience is key. Changing our habits and sticking to new ones takes time and persistence. These things don’t happen immediately – it takes time and motivation. Just because it’s a New Year, does not mean you will notice a difference straight away – and that’s completely ok and totally normal! Accept that changing a habit and sticking to a new goal without finding it difficult at times is all part of the process. Take it day by day. For example, when you have completed one day of eating animal-free, reward yourself for that! One day is done, now onto the next. It eventually becomes a habit and will get easier and easier! You can do it. Stay positive and motivated and remind yourself that it isn’t all an upward journey. Life comes with it’s hurdles and that’s okay. It’s all about accepting them and learning to jump them.

I hope this blog post has helped you guys! Subscribe if you want to see more content and let me know how you get on with your New Years Resolutions! Remember, you can do anything – believe in yourself!

Have a lovely rest of your day!

Tackling Negative Thoughts

Hey guys, how are you doing today?

I hope you all had a lovely New Year. I hope this year blesses you with the happiness, love and success that you deserve!

As we have waved December farewell, a clean slate greets us which is yet to be filled with amazing memories and adventures. Do you have any New Years resolutions?

Today I want to talk about tackling negative thoughts. As Christmas is over and we have celebrated the New Year, some of us may feel slightly down at the thought of returning back to school, uni or work. We have slipped back into reality after a magical time of year, so we could be experiencing lower moods which are derived from negative thoughts. Although I’m no expert, I would love to offer and share some advice about what you can do to help these negative thoughts in order to feel overall more satisfied and happier with yourself.

  1. Challenge them
Once you have recognised and noticed a negative thought, try to challenge it, or turn it into something positive. Being able to recognise and challenge these thoughts not only helps you control them, but also helps to rationalise them. This helps you realise that these negative thoughts are often inaccurate and are usually habitual.
  2. Write down positive thoughts
When you find yourself immersed in negative thoughts, take the time out to write down things that you make you happy. Whether its in a diary or just on a piece of paper, writing down positive things is a great way to cheer yourself up and allow the mind to focus on the positive aspects of your life. Whether it’s things you are grateful for or things you like about yourself, write them all down!
  3. Talk to someone
It sounds cliché, but sometimes the best thing to do when you’re feeling down is to talk to somebody. A problem shared is a problem halved. Sharing our feelings may be difficult but just remember that people do care! People care about you the way you care about them. Sharing these feelings allows lifts a heavy weight off our chest which can feel both refreshing and relieving.

So, there’s some advice I thought I would share with you! I hope you enjoyed the blog post and let me know what you think. Feel free to comment and subscribe if you would like to see more content!

Have a lovely rest of your day.

The New Year

Hey guys,

How is everyone? Did you all have a lovely Christmas? I am aware I haven’t written in some time – I’ve been super busy with family events and Christmas celebrations. It’s been a joyful month filled with bubbly prosecco and endless laughter with family and friends.

Now…the gap between Christmas and New Year. What’s that all about? Many of us feel sad as the exciting build-up of festive joys comes to end and we wave our family and friends goodbye until next time. It can feel quite lonely – a really lovely time of year has ended and we aren’t quite sure how to fill the current days before the New Year.

I’ve come to realise that being excited for the New Year and treating it as a new opportunity is such a good way to think positively about the future and reduce the festive-blues. Life has provided us with a brand new, clean slate which will be filled with excitement, new memories and opportunities.

It sounds cliché, I know. But leave the bad in the past and bring the good things in your life into 2020. The past is in the past now – and this is your chance to keep it that way! Believe that this year will be a great new chapter in your life.

Each year is like a diary. You open the first page of many – all unwritten, blank and untouched. Each page is an opportunity to create and personalise new memories which can be treasured forever. Positive thoughts breed and attract positivity. Make this year your year because you deserve it!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post. I know it’s brief but there’s plenty more to come in the New Year! Happy New Year everyone, have a good one.

Mindfulness

Hey guys,

How’s your December going so far? What have you been up to? The frosty cold that welcomes us every morning never fails to trigger a burst of excitement inside me as Christmas soon arrives. Recently, I’ve been very consumed with assignments and deadlines on top of Christmas shopping and organising. Whenever I walk through the city centre on the way to Uni, I can’t help but observe the external panic and rush of other people, cramming their endless ‘to-do’ lists into one day.  So today, I want to talk about mindfulness – a very effective tip to maintain a calm mindset and overall a more positive wellbeing.

You close your eyes. You feel nothing but the waves of calmness which effortlessly run through your body. You notice your stomach expand whilst you inhale the rich, invigorating air, as you release weights of negative energy each time you exhale. You are calm, your affinity for positive energy is present and you are in control…

And there’s a small insight into what mindfulness feels like. Enabling yourself to take a few minutes each day to switch off and indulge in a private, peaceful bubble of calmness has been proven to have profound effects on our mental wellbeing.

If you are struggling where and when to begin mindfulness exercises, try YouTube or Spotify. There are countless video’s and audio tracks on mindfulness meditation provided for both beginners and advanced meditators. Begin by setting your alarm five minutes earlier and utilise those extra minutes to switch off from the outside world and have a moment of restful mindfulness. Begin your day with a refreshed, clean slate, and remember to repeat this daily! I also find that sleep mediation works wonders as well – so don’t hesitate to try that out too. I’ve already mentioned these in a previous blog post, but I really recommend ‘The Honest Guys,’ – they have an extensive variety of different meditations and mindfulness practices, so definitely check them out.

When I first tried out meditation, I didn’t think I would experience the beneficial effects as much as I did. Within days I felt calmer, more collected, less stressed and overall a healthier and happier person! I couldn’t recommend it enough, so please try it out and let me know what you think.

I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s post, let me know how you get on!

Dealing with Anxiety

Hey everyone, how are you all doing?

I’m currently waiting for the train heading back from London – it was absolutely freezing this morning! As I was walking to the tube station, there were layers of frost which glistened on the fallen leaves on the ground and the cold air felt like tiny icicles piercing my face. The chilly weather seems appropriate now that it’s finally December – I couldn’t be more excited about it! What advent calendars have you got this year?

Today I want to talk about anxiety. Whether it’s some more than others, we all feel it on different levels from time to time. In the moment, it can become very overwhelming with both the emotional and physical symptoms that come with feeling anxious. Over the years, I have tried out different methods to deal with these heightened feelings of anxiety, whether it’s in the particular moment or just in general. I’d like to share these coping mechanisms with you so you can try them out and hopefully they will help you.

  • Focus on your breathing
When you’re in a moment of panic, what’s really important is your breathing. It’s mind over matter here, and if you can start to focus on your breathing, encouraging yourself to slowly breathe in and out, your mind will eventually be convinced that you aren’t anxious anymore because you are breathing slower. Be patient with this. A few slow breathes won’t stop you feeling anxious, but the persistence of slow breathing will gradually help yourself to calm down.
  • Get in touch with your senses
I’ve read a lot about the effects of doing this when you are in a moment of panic and it is proven to be very effective. When you feel anxious, try to observe what’s around you and what you can see/touch/hear/smell. It helps channel your mind back to reality and reminds yourself that you are okay. Bringing your senses back to reality helps reduce anxiety as it’s a reminder that you are in control, you are secure, and you are okay.
  • Remind yourself that you have felt this way before
Reminding yourself that you have felt this way before and nothing bad happened the last time is another way to reassure yourself that things will be okay. Yes, you feel anxious right now but this moment will pass, just like it did last time. Just focus on your breathing, get in touch with your surroundings and remind yourself this will pass.

These are some key coping mechanisms I’ve found to be very useful when I’m feeling anxious or overwhelmed. If you would like to hear more tips please let me know!

Calming Your Thoughts Before Sleep

Hey everyone, how are you all doing today?

Soon, we will wish autumn farewell for the year, and winter will greet us with frosty fingertips. As the fallen leaves on the ground turn crispier, the twiggy branches on trees remain bare as the icy air allures winter hats and scarves.

So, stopping racing thoughts before we sleep, how can we do it? A lot of us are prone to overthinking, especially when I’m trying to wind down before bed. I don’t know about you, but it often occurs when I’ve had a stressful day, or when I’ve got a busy schedule ahead of me. I close my eyes, trying to sleep, yet my mind is whirling around in a pool of rushing thoughts, making it seem impossible to drift to sleep.

As a frequent mindfulness goer, I have learnt that being able to distract your mind from busy thought’s is a powerful way to calm ourselves down. I have found that an effective way to distract your mind from reoccurring, stressful thoughts is by taking yourself to the present. Ask yourself: where am I? What can I touch? What can I smell?

As you close your eyes, you can feel the soft duvet shelter your resting body. You can feel your head sink effortlessly into the pillow. The warmth from the hot water bottle emits into your skin, as you inhale the soothing scent of lavender.

Not only does this distract your mind from busy thoughts, but it calms the body and facilitates relaxation. Take yourself to the present. Remind yourself that there is no point worrying about tomorrow or worrying about the past when right now it isn’t in your control so it’s not worth worrying about!

So next time you’re struggling to sleep, close your eyes and try distracting your mind by focussing on the present! I hope this blog helps you, and if you want to see more content please subscribe!
