Self-Development Book Recommendations

Happy Thursday everyone,

How is your week going so far? I’m currently curled up in bed with a warm cup of tea and a hot water bottle – a relaxing end to a busy day!

So, let’s chat about personal development. Since being at home so often, I have spent a lot of time reflecting, which led me stumble across the concepts ‘self-growth’ and ‘self-development.’ During the first lockdown, focussing on myself and my personal growth became a personal project of mine, and it’s continued ever since.  After listening to numerous podcasts and reading a variety of books, I realised that self-development is an endless process – it’s like a book with many chapters and no ending. We are constantly growing as individuals, and there is always room to improve.

Reading a variety of self-development books has been an integral part of my motivation to work on my personal growth, and so I’d love to share the ones which I really enjoyed and which I found most useful. So, grab your favourite hot drink, get cosy and enjoy!

  1. The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod
    I am not overexaggerating when I read this whole book in one night! By Hal Elrod, ‘The Miracle Morning’ is a self-development book, focussing on how to build a morning routine using 6 practices known as SAVERS. I won’t give too much away, but reading this book has encouraged me to get up earlier and include: meditation, affirmations, visualisation, exercise, reading and writing in my morning routine. This book also touches on the benefits of surrounding yourself with positive people, whilst highlighting the importance of stepping away from those who are toxic/bring negativity into your life. So, if you’re in search for some motivation, I’d definitely recommend giving this book a read!
  2. Good Vibes, Good Life by Vex King
    I’m sure you’ve definitely heard about this book. It became the centre of attention during lockdown 1.0 and I completely understand why! I keep revisiting this book, especially when I’m in need of a boost. Using the Law of Attraction, vibrations and manifestation, this book helps to achieve self-love and a positive mindset with insightful, raw, and genuine perspectives. Vex tackles a variety of topics, from forming positive habits to handling negative people. Personally, this book has helped me to understand that self-love is an art to be mastered – it takes time, effort, and practice but anyone can work on it. If you’re looking for a simple read, which also focusses on personal growth, then I’d really recommend reading this one.
  3.  The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck by Sarah Knight
    Another great book which focusses on the importance of priorities by choosing what you actually care about. Sarah’s narrative is very to-the-point, speckled with light-hearted humour throughout. She explains how putting yourself first, and being honest with yourself, isn’t something you should feel guilty for. Basically, as you can probably tell by the title, the book simply explains how you should stop caring about so many things and start living for yourself! (However, I should forewarn you about the number of times the ‘eff’ word is mentioned throughout, but judging from the title, I’m sure you get the idea).
